WHO WE ARE

For eleven years & counting, the YDC has been the best place for teenagers to hang out after school. Located in North Calgary, we are very easy to access for students taking the bus because we’re a short walk from major bus lines such as the 3, 46, 88, 301, and more. Through the generosity of our donors and the support of BP Church, we are able to provide a safe, fun, and free place for teens to hangout with their friends and adult mentors, play games and sports, and enjoy after-school meals.

OUR HISTORY

In 2005, BP Church was looking for ways to meet the needs of our immediate and surrounding communities. We paired up with local agencies with similar objectives to find out what those needs were. The two primary needs identified were language services for new immigrants and a safe, positive place for teenagers during the ‘critical hours’ after school (weekdays from 3-6 pm).

BP Church met both needs (see also Agape Language Centre). 2005 BP Church purchased and renovated an old church building, and in 2006, we opened our doors. Wilf and Audrey Kimball (a local senior couple) would volunteer their time and provide mentorship and delicious, home-cooked meals daily to our few students. By 2009 we offered a safe after-school space for over 130 students weekly.

In 2009 the City of Calgary launched a groundbreaking initiative with the development of comprehensive, city-wide after-school programming for kids and teens (the first of its kind in Canada). You can read more about the city’s initiatives here.

WHAT’S UP NOW?

We are as committed as ever to providing the teenagers in our community with a fun and safe environment during after school hours.
